Birth isn’t something we suffer; it’s something we surrender to. – Ina May Gaskin

FAQs

Birth Planning & Preparation

What is birth mapping, and why is it important?

Birth mapping is a flexible, informed approach to birth planning. Instead of a rigid plan, we explore different possibilities and decision points so you feel prepared no matter what happens. This way, you remain in control and confident throughout your birth.

How can a doula help me prepare for birth?

I provide education, resources, and hands-on techniques to help you feel confident about birth. We cover everything from pain relief options to advocacy skills, so you go into labor feeling informed and empowered.

What if my birth doesn’t go as planned?

Birth is unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean you can’t prepare. With birth mapping, we plan for different scenarios so you feel in control no matter what happens. I’ll also be there to provide emotional support and help you process any unexpected changes.

Can a doula help me navigate the hospital system?

Yes! Hospitals have their own routines and policies, but you always have choices. I help you understand your rights, communicate effectively with providers, and advocate for the birth you want.

Hiring and Working With Me

When should I hire a doula?

There’s no right or wrong here, earlier the better so we have time for education, preparation, and building a strong connection. However, I take clients at any stage of pregnancy. It’s never too late!

What’s included in your doula packages?

Without being bias (lol I totally am), My packages include everything you need to navigate this time in your life! Multiple visits during pregnancy, on call for labour & birth support and then many postpartum visits (how many visits depends on the package you choose.) I quite literally fill your freezer up (no seriously, there is A LOT of food involved!) and treat you with gifts along the way. I also include birth mapping to help you plan and prepare for different scenarios so you feel super duper prepared and confident for this new life you’re about to enter!

Do you offer postpartum support?

Yes! I include it in all my birth packages plus I also offer it as a stand alone package! You can see more of whats included in my services guide.

How do we work together during pregnancy?

We have prenatal sessions where we do a lot of learning (or unlearning!) and basically we become bestfriends. I mean, maybe not bestttttt friends - but pretty close. I’m available over text & call for any support you need between visits, plus I normally check in with you if I haven’t heard from you in a while!

Do you support VBACs (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean)?

Absolutely! VBACs are a safe option for many women, and I provide guidance, resources, and support to help you achieve the birth you want. I have also completed a training with Dr Hazel Keedle (the VBAC queen!) so I feel confident in support vbac births.

General Questions

What is a Doula?

A doula is your unwavering support, your calm in the chaos, and your biggest cheerleader through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I’m not here for clinical care—that’s your midwife or doctor’s role. My job is to support you emotionally, physically, and practically so you feel safe, confident, and in control. Basically, I become your best friend who deeply cares, understands your needs, and shows up for you in all the ways that matter—without judgment, without pressure, just pure support, love, and reassurance.

What does a doula do during labour?

I do lots of different things! Sometimes everything, sometimes not much. I have attended births where I am actively squeezing hips, helping with positional changes and doing lots of massages. I say affirmations to you during a contraction to help your mind get through it, I remind you to breathe and let the waves wash over you. Sometimes I am running around doing the nitty-gritty jobs so that your partner can stay focused on you. That means I might empty & fill the pool with warm water, I run around to get more towels, I’m fishing floaties out the pool or pinning up the fairy lights.

What doesn’t a doula do?

A doula does not give medical advice and does not perform anything medical (i.e. I will not take your blood pressure, listen to babies heart or perform vaginal exams.)

How is a doula differ from a midwife?

A midwife provides medical care, such as monitoring the baby, checking vitals, and handling complications. A doula does not perform medical tasks but instead focuses on emotional and physical support, ensuring you feel empowered, comfortable, and informed throughout your birth.

Do you support all types of births?

Absolutely! Whether it’s your first birth or 5th, in hospital or at home, with medical support or without it. I’m here fully for YOU. I’m here to support you to birth simply, on your own terms, where and how you feel comfortable.

Do doulas only support ‘natural’ births?

No! A doula supports your birth choices, whether that’s an unmedicated home birth, a hospital birth with an epidural, an induction, or a cesarean. My role is to support you, no matter how your birth unfolds. I have supported women choosing elective cesareans because that is the right choice for them, and that’s all I care about!

Can I have a doula if I’m planning a hospital birth?

Absolutely! A hospital birth can definitely benefit from doula support. I’ll help you navigate hospital policies, ensure your birth plan is respected, and make sure every new shift change is up to speed on your preferences. I’ll also create a calm and inviting space—think fairy lights, affirmation cards, cozy vibes, and a calming diffuser. No hospital smells here, just a peaceful environment for you to feel grounded and supported!

Does a doula replace my partner?

Not at all! A doula complements your partner’s support by guiding them on how to best assist you. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, your partner can be present and confident, knowing they have backup.
